What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow notch or other narrow opening, especially one for receiving something, as a coin in a slot machine. Also called a groove, slit, or fissure. (aviation) An allocated time for an aircraft to take off or land at an airport. The use of slots has greatly improved the efficiency of air traffic control at busy airports, avoiding repeated delays from too many planes trying to take off or land at the same time.

In computing, a space in memory or on disk that can be allocated to hold a particular type of object.

In casinos and other gambling establishments, a device that accepts cash or paper tickets with barcodes as input. The machine then displays a series of rotating reels that display symbols aligned with a theme. The machine pays out credits if the symbols line up on the payline, according to a pay table. Some slots have special features that can increase the player’s chances of winning, such as Wilds acting as substitutes for other symbols.

In natural language understanding, a slot is an NLU configuration that determines what types of responses the system will return for certain words or phrases. Administrators and contact center managers can create new slots for a given intent or for specific phrases. You can also find pre-configured slot types in the Library and use them as a starting point for your own custom slots. To create a slot, select an Existing slot type or select New List, New RegEx, or New Dynamic.
